On March 26, 2010, South Korea's ship Cheonan was sunk by a surprise torpedo attack by a North Korean submarine resulting in the death of 46 crew members. Seoul's Ministry of National Defense organized a Civilian-Military Joint Investigation Group on March 31 to identify the cause of the sinking as well as the entity responsible for the incident. Foreign experts from the U.S., Australia, UK and Sweden were also in the Joint Investigation Group.

Duyeon Kim is the Deputy Director of Nuclear Non-Proliferation at the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation where her policy work focuses on North Korea, nuclear non-proliferation, nuclear security and nuclear terrorism prevention. Kim has published in major publications including the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists and World Politics Review. Prior to joining the Center, Kim was a career Diplomatic and Security Journalist in Seoul.
