Senior Policy Director Alexandra Bell spoke with La Tercera, a Chilean newspaper about the potential for a new arms race following U.S. withdrawal from the INF Treaty.
“It can certainly trigger and arms race. The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces treaty prohibited the production and deployment of ground-based ballistic missiles and cruise missiles with ranges between 500 and 5,500 km. If the treaty collapses, both the United States and Russia are no longer bound by these restrictions and will be free to produce and deploy ground-based missiles of intermediate ranges. We have already been down this road once and we created the INF Treaty to pull ourselves back from the nuclear brink.
