In the Seven Myths of Nuclear Terrorism, Dr. Matthew Bunn, a Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation Board member, and Anthony Wier debunk the myths that terrorists do not have sufficiency capability, opportunity, and desire to acquire weapons-grade material, build or steal a nuclear weapon, and detonate it in the United States. Dr. Bunn makes several crucial recommendations on how to maximize our lines of defense against terrorists seeking to acquire a nuclear weapon. These recommendations include strengthening and increasing funding for the Cooperative Threat Reduction (CTR) program which provides for US-Russian cooperation to secure nuclear stockpiles in the former Soviet states, as well as for the Global Threat Reduction Initiative (GTRI) that expands cooperative efforts to secure and dismantle stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction beyond the former Soviet Union, and effectively locking down all other vulnerable caches worldwide that cannot be removed or destroyed.
