The Center’s annual summer conference will take place July 24. This year’s theme is Managing Global Nuclear Threats.
The event will take place in the Dirksen Senate Office Building, Room 106, from 4:30-7 p.m., with a reception to follow. It is free and open to the public, but RSVPs are required.
The keynote discussion, Reducing Threats in a New Nuclear Age, will feature Ambassador William Burns, President of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State; and Avril Haines, Deputy Director of Columbia World Projects and Former Principal Deputy National Security Advisor to President Obama. They will cover the challenges in managing nuclear threats in a multi-polar world and how U.S. actions are affecting global strategic stability. This session will be moderated by Jill Dougherty, Global Fellow, Kennan Institute, Woodrow Wilson Center and former CNN Moscow Bureau Chief.
Another panel, Nuclear Hotspots: Assessment and Advice, features four experts on various geographic regions. The panelists will outline current nuclear challenges in South Asia, Iran, North Korea and Russia, as well as how those regional challenges affect or are affected by China.
The speakers for the panel, moderated by the Washington Post’s John Hudson, are:
- Ankit Panda, Adjunct Senior Fellow in the Defense Posture Project, Federation of American Scientists
- Ariane Tabatabai, Associate Political Scientist, RAND Corporation
- Richard Johnson, Senior Director for Fuel Cycle and Verification, Nuclear Threat Initiative
- Alexandra Bell, Senior Policy Director, Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation
Current and former Members of Congress will also speak at the event, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senator Chris Murphy and Executive Director and former Congressman John Tierney.
