Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation Executive Director John Tierney joined BBC Radio 5 to discuss escalating tensions between the United States and North Korea. Tierney reiterated that the United States and Russia posses over 90% of the world’s nuclear arsenal, and the U.S. has a far greater capability than North Korea on nuclear weapons. However, President Trump’s and Kim Jong Un’s bombastic rhetoric is disconcerting and destabilizing. Instead of unhelpful rhetoric, the U.S. and North Korea need to begin diplomatic talks to bring down the temperature. Tierney suggests multi-lateral diplomatic talks, including China, coupled with effective sanctions to deescalate tensions between the countries.
