Anna Schumann is the Communications Director for the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation, overseeing the strategy and implementation of all website, public relations, email marketing, print, digital media, social media and design tasks. Previously, she was the Communications Manager for the Association of Government Accountants, responsible for email strategy, social media, public relations and writing and editing. She has worked as an Editor for SmartBrief, managing the production of 13 email newsletters, and was a newspaper and online reporter in her hometown of Houston.
Schumann holds bachelor’s degrees in journalism and political science from Texas Tech University. Her professional passion has always been at the intersection of policy and communications, and articulating how policy affects people. Though this is her first job in this field, she has fallen in love with nuclear weapons policy and the many possibilities that exist for communicating its intricacies to the general public — especially to new audiences and younger generations.
Through extensive pitching, networking and promotional efforts, Schumann has connected Center experts to national publications including The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, CNN, The Associated Press, MSNBC, Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report, The Wall Street Journal, National Public Radio, Vox, Bloomberg, The Christian Science Monitor, POLITICO, NBC News, ABC News, FOX News, CNBC, Sinclair, BuzzFeed, The Daily Beast, Time Magazine, PBS NewsHour and The Los Angeles Times; international publications including The Guardian, Deutsche Welle, La Tercera, the BBC World News, Financial Times, ABC (Australia), CTV News (Canada), i24 (Israel), El Pais, and Al Jazeera; niche publications including Wired, Trumpcast, Today Explained, Defense One, Defense News, Stars and Stripes, Scientific American, Aerospace America, Roll Call, Foreign Policy and Breaking Defense; local publications including The Las Vegas Sun, The Santa Fe New Mexican, KTRH Radio Houston, The Columbus Dispatch, The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, and Wisconsin Public Radio’s Central Time; and has gotten op-eds placed in outlets including The Seattle Times, The Washington Post, Teen Vogue, The Hill, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, Inkstick Media, Responsible Statecraft, The Cape Cod Times, The Raleigh News & Observer, and War on the Rocks.
Schumann is a member of the National Capital Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America, the National Press Club and the Junior League of Washington. In her free time, she roots on her Texas Tech Red Raiders and Houston Astros, and enjoys exploring all the beauty and history in the mid-Atlantic region.
