Senator Chris Murphy

In 2006, when we awarded the very first Father Robert F. Drinan Award to none other than Father Drinan himself, a young and courageous new leader was just getting his start.

Chris Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut, was elected to the House of Representatives in 2006 largely due to his strong opposition to President Bush’s Iraq War.

On June 9th, Council for a Livable World and the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation will be awarding Senator Murphy with the prestigious Father Robert F. Drinan National Peace and Human Rights Award.

As a Senator, Murphy remains a passionate advocate for non-military solutions to conflict:

  • He was one of two Democrats to vote against President Obama’s 2013 request for war authorization in Syria
  • He continues to criticize the lack of authorization for war in the Middle East
  • He has called for transferring parts of the Pentagon’s bloated budget to instead fund diplomacy and foreign aid
  • And he remains one of the strongest voices in the Senate in support of diplomacy to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran

We need more of this kind of fearlessness in Congress. Help us honor Senator Murphy’s courage in taking principled stands on national security and foreign policy.
