USA and Russia renewed dialogue on strategic stability

Senior Policy Director John Erath was quoted in a Voice of America article on the first round of U.S.-Russian talks in Geneva.

President Biden said earlier that he expects that the negotiations will eventually lead to the signing of a new treaty, said John Erath, of the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation.

“I think both sides can agree that the world will be safer with fewer nuclear weapons, which is much more difficult to achieve. One of the main goals of the dialogue is to determine how many nuclear weapons each side should have in order to deter. The US delegation is led by Wendy Sherman and Bonnie Jenkins. These are experienced people who know what they are doing, and the Biden administration has made it very clear that it has an interest in arms control with Russia. If Moscow adheres to a similar approach, they will also assemble an experienced team. In this case, there will be potential for some progress,” says John Erath. Read more
