The Center hosted its annual conference September 15 in Washington and online, with many people joining the livestream and participating in the robust discussions.
Our lineup of esteemed speakers and panelists sought to answer one critical question: How should Pentagon spending, including for nuclear weapons, best be structured to provide actual security?

Our first panel, “The Costs of False Security: The Fallacy of National Missile Defense, the Golden Dome and Nuclear Weapons in Space,” was moderated by Andrew Facini, Communications Director for The Council on Strategic Risks and a Senior Fellow in The Janne E. Nolan Center for Strategic Weapons. Panelists were Clayton Swope, Deputy Director of the Aerospace Security Project and a Senior Fellow in the Defense and Security Department at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS); Dr. Laura Grego, Senior Research Director of the Global Security Program at the Union of Concerned Scientists and Joseph Cirincione, national security analyst and author with over 40 years of experience in Washington, D.C., and a member of the Council for a Livable World Board of Directors.

Our second panel, “The True Costs of War: Iran Following the Pattern,” was moderated by Center board member Tess Bridgeman, Co-Editor-in-Chief of Just Security. Panelists were Miriam Pemberton, Associate Fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies and former Director of its Peace Economy Transitions Project; Heidi Peltier, Senior Researcher at the Watson School of International and Public Affairs at Brown University and Director of Programs at the Costs of War project; and William D. Hartung, Principal Advisor, Project on Government Oversight.
