ICBM door incidents worry anti-nuke groups

October 25, 2013
By Leigh Munsil

This week’s revelations that airmen left open blast doors that protect nuclear missiles are just more evidence against the aging nuclear weapons infrastructure, disarmament groups said Thursday.

“This is another incident that suggests that there’s a systemic problem in the nuclear command and control system,” said Daryl Kimball, executive director of the Arms Control Association.

Air Force officials this week admitted that officers at Minot Air Force Base, N.D. and Malmstrom Air Force Base, Mont., were caught leaving open blast doors intended to keep their underground command posts safe from intruders in at least two incidents. The news was first reported by The Associated Press.

It’s a reminder that the margin for error is extremely small when dealing with such weapons, Kimball said.
