On the Center’s website, I’ve written a long piece on the new sanctions bills that the House and Senate will be considering in the next few months. Some of them are measures similar to what we’ve seen before, but there are also some new twists being mulled.
Whether they’re old or new, the additional sanctions being considered are coming at an inauspicious time. As you’ll read, the administration has asked Congress to hold off on new sanctions in order to provide time for negotiations. Moreover, a growing number of former officials and national security experts are skeptical of the benefit of passing new sanctions at this time.
