Today in the Star-Ledger, the major newspaper in my great home state of New Jersey, Laicie and I have an op-ed discussing the Senate’s role in upcoming negotiations with Iran. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee is chaired by NJ Senator Robert Menendez, and our piece encourages Sen. Menendez to work with the administration on a diplomatic solution to the standoff.
Here’s an excerpt:
… it is important not to interpret the success of current sanctions as a mandate for even more. Rather than pile harsher measures onto Iran’s already crippled economy, Congress should shift gears to focus on crafting a diplomatic solution that will bring the Iran impasse to a close. Patient pressure on Iran has provided the leverage that is needed to secure a diplomatic compromise — now is the time to use that leverage.
